Ending gender based violence

Posted Mar 17, 2011 in African History by maureenemukoya - 1 Comment

At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, raped, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, with the abuser usually someone known to her, ranging from rape to domestic violence and acid burnings to dowry deaths and so-called honor killings.

Gender-based violence is a major cause of death and disability for women aged 15 to 44 years, rating higher than deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents, cancer, and malaria. And the psychological consequences associated with sexual violence and domestic abuse leaves women incredibly vulnerable and jeopardizes the well-being of families, fractures communities, and stalls the economic development of a nation.

One of my friends once told me that only women can help women get out of this situation, but I think that even men have a role to play.

Hey, you are with me, I have questions only you can answer, please can you spare some minutes? When will women band together?
When will women stop to need a man’s consent?
When will our men become partners?
When will men accept that we are one and the same as God says?
What can we do to end this big challenge in our community?
Please we need more light, shine more light on this.
Wealth of experience is needed

l totally agree with you… men have a big part to play! If we don’t become the protectors or providers who will take our place. As l was reading your blog l felt sad cause that is the harsh reality… men can not be replaced and yet they are doing more harm than good!!! but l want to make a difference….. Maybe that first step could be answering one of you questions.

Men will become partners when other men put their foot down and say Boldly Gender based violence is wrong and should not be tolerated!
